HMS Calliope (Tyneside)

Recruiting across the North East of England, this unit is home to over 100 Royal Naval Reserves.

Role

Led by Commander Chris Bovill, HMS Calliope on Tyneside is home to over 100 Royal Naval Reserves. The unit recruits right across the North East of England - from the Scottish Borders to the River Tees.
 
The unit‘s long association with Tyneside was formally recognised in 1985 when HMS Calliope was awarded the Roll of Honorary Freeman of the City of Newcastle.

RNR presence

There has been a Royal Naval Reserve presence on Tyneside since 1905. Its first training ship, HMS Calliope was a veteran of the Samoa Hurricane, which was berthed at Elswick.

In 1951, the original HMS Calliope was replaced by HMS Falmouth which was renamed Calliope.

Retaining the name HMS Calliope

The unit moved ashore in 1968 to its current location, retaining the name HMS Calliope. In Greek mythology, Calliope was the muse of epic poetry and the Royal Navy has given this name to six ships.

New facilities

Renovations include improvements to the external appearance of the building, a state of the art fitness suite with climbing wall, boat store, new classroom and office facilities.
