HMS Dragon (D35)

Instantly recognisable by the Welsh Dragon on her bow, HMS Dragon is one of the Royal Navy’s six Type 45 air defence destroyers. Together with her sister vessels, Dragon is one of the most advanced warships in the world.

HMS Dragon‘s main role is air defence: providing protection to her fellow ships by detecting, interrogating and neutralising enemy threats with the fearsome Sea Viper anti-air missile system.

Versatility is a hallmark of the Type 45 destroyer class, and HMS Dragon is capable of an array of duties outside of her air defence role, from providing disaster relief to counter-narcotics boarding operations.

Having undergone a major upgrade to her weapons, IT, communications and marine engineering systems, HMS Dragon is currently undergoing sea trials in preparation for her third overseas deployment.
Daring Class

Numbering more than 200, the crew of HMS Dragon is made up of Aircrewmen, Weapons Engineers, Communications Technicians and more. Together, their roles and responsibilities include:

  • Long-range air target searching
  • Multiple target tracking
  • Long-distance target engagement
  • Helicopter maintenance
  • Assisting with helicopter take-off and landing
  • Operating weapons
