47 Commando (Raiding Group) Royal Marines

47 Commando (Raiding Group) Royal Marines is the lead for amphibious warfare and Royal Navy board and search training. The group is tasked with training and developing core amphibious and surface assault skills and equipment.

Role

Led by Colonel Rich Maltby and made up of four separate units, 1 Assault Group are masters of small boat operations. They use fast, highly manoeuvrable watercraft to conduct hit-and-run operations on enemy ships and to deliver troops and equipment ashore. 

The group also provides training in a number of areas, from engineering to assault navigation. One of the group’s sub-units, 11 Amphibious Trials and Training Squadron, is responsible for conducting trials and testing of future crafts.
