HMS Example (P165) is one of 16 Archer-class patrol vessels assigned to the Coastal Forces Squadron, providing maritime security and operations within Europe’s coastal waters.

Role

HMS Example (P165) is part of Coastal Forces Squadron (EAST), based at HMS Calliope in Gateshead. The ship, operated by a small team of 5 sailors and led by an experienced Lieutenant, regularly contributes to UK and NATO exercises and operations in UK territorial waters, Norway, Western Europe and Baltic Sea.

1985

The First Example

HMS Example is the first Royal Navy ship to bear the name. Originally used by the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service, she is constructed in 1970 as the lead ship of the Example-class – a build run of the Archer-class, including Express, Explorer and Exploit.

1994

Royal Navy

The dissolution of the Royal Naval Auxiliary Service sees HMS Example commissioned into the Royal Navy, where she is transferred to the Northumbrian URNU.
