HMS Scott supports Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths (STEM) at local school careers fair

HMS Scott recently supported a local careers event held at Hele’s Secondary School, Plymouth..
The event was aimed at students aged 12 to 16, to promote future career opportunities within different industry sectors with Scott’s Team supporting vocations in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths known as STEM.
Three of Scott’s STEM ambassadors attended, Lt Heather O’Connell and Lt Kerry Woollard, both Hydrographic and Meteorological Officers, along with ET Siobhan Hodgson, Marine Engineer, in addition to the Ship’s Engineer Officer Lt Will Astley in order to promote Science and Engineering within the Royal Navy.
ET Hodgson said: "It was good to engage with people of a different age group who are enthusiastic about the same interests. I hope I have been able to have an influence on recruitment into the branch at a time when Engineers are vital."
The STEM ambassador scheme is a group of volunteers from a wide range of science, technology, engineering and mathematics related jobs and disciplines who offer their time and enthusiasm to bring STEM subjects alive and to demonstrate the value of STEM both in life and future careers.
This is particularly important with 2018 being the year of engineering.

The career fair also marked an ideal opportunity to rekindle connections with the school, one of HMS Scott’s affiliations.
Lt Will Astley, said afterwards; "There is a real importance to maintain links with all of our affiliates to build a rapport between the Ship’s Company and the communities we serve. Not only that, it allows the students to make a personal connection to their affiliate ship."
HMS Scott is currently undergoing an extended period of maintenance within the UK, with plans to provide support to Plymouth Armed Forces Careers Office, hosting local school visits onboard and in the near future engage with the Ship’s other influential affiliations.
Not only will it deliver first hand experiences maximising engagement within recruitment, it helps re-affirm commitments to the Armed Forces Covenant.
