A first for the small ship community

An MCM Crew taking an OPV into refit caused much excitement and trepidation among MCM2 Crew 6 as they docked down HMS Tyne in Falmouth Docks over the summer.
OP JICARA has seen Crew 6 rise to many challenges and over July and August the ship completed an intensive docking and maintenance package, the first for 5 years.
Crew 6 worked successfully with A&P Dockyard and BAE to deliver repairs, preservation and inspections across the entire ship, from her anchors to antennas!
This included a complete re-spraying of the ship’s hull and superstructure and an overhaul of her shafts and propellers.
I am extremely proud of what my crew have achieved over the past 7 weeks to get HMS Tyne ready to re-commence operations.
This feat of engineering took place while rotating the entire Ship’s Company through their annual summer leave, providing much needed downtime for the high performing team.
HMS Tyne’s Commanding Officer, Lt Cdr Peter Barfoot said, “I am extremely proud of what my crew have achieved over the past 7 weeks to get HMS Tyne ready to re-commence operations.
“This is especially so as there has only been half of the Ship’s Company on board at any one time.
“The ship is now in great shape to continue her tasking into the future!”
HMS Tyne then sailed to conduct a series of engineering trials and team training prior to returning to her home port of HMNB Portsmouth.
