Sultan Wives Club bake their way to a treat for local charities

22 December 2016
A small group of enthusiastic ladies from the HMS Sultan Wives Club put their exceptional baking skills to the test recently in order to raise a significant amount for local charities and good causes.

HMS Sultan Wives Club is a small group of retired service wives, offering friendship to any women whose spouses have served within the Royal Navy.

Each year the club’s members try to raise £1,000 by providing refreshments at a number of activities within the establishment including the Summer Show, theatre club plays and the Heritage Open Days.

This year the £1,000 raised was split in two, with £500 given to Leelsand School towards the costs of refurbishing their swimming pool and the other £500 was donated to Alabare Christian Care Support, who help support homeless veterans in the Gosport and Fareham area.

Thank you so much for raising this valuable money for these very worthy causes

Captain Peter Towel, Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan

Captain Peter Towel, the Commanding Officer of HMS Sultan, presented the donations to Leesland School, Business Manager Kate Dowell and Alabare Christian Care, Team Hampshire Home For Veteran representative Dawn Foster on behalf of the Wives Club.

Dawn said, “It was wonderful to receive this today, Seafarers are purchasing a property in Gosport for us to use and this will go towards that project.”

Kate said, “In addition to being used by our students, our pool is used by local schools and clubs, it’s over 40 years old and is in need of refurbishment, we are working tirelessly to raise money for the project. It is fantastic to receive this donation today, thank you.”

In addressing all of those in attendance Captain Towel said, “It’s great to hear about such wonderful charitable organisations, I feel quite humbled by this, the best of luck to you.”

And to the Wives Club, “Thank you so much for raising this valuable money for these very worthy causes.”
