The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is an international system, developed by International Maritime Organization (IMO), which uses improved terrestrial and satellite technology and ship-board radio systems. It ensures rapid alerting of shore-based rescue and communications authorities in the event of an emergency. In addition, the system alerts vessels in the immediate vicinity and provides improved means of locating survivors.
It is mandatory for all ships subject to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). It is mandatory for cargo ships 300 gross tons or greater and all passenger vessels, on international voyages. The global implementation of GMDSS services became effective on February 1, 1999.
Course details
The aim of the course is to give the student a basic understanding of GMDSS, understand how to utilise the voice and digital communication system and identify areas that will be of use within their own maritime safety system.
The IMTT Introduction to GMDSS covers all aspects of GMDSS including Equipment, Areas at sea, Satellite & Radio communications, Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and Maritime safety information.
Training is given on using the Maritime VHF radio for transmitting/ receiving DSC messages and utilising for general use as well as safety or urgent information.
